Street Rehabilitation Project
The City of Georgetown will be performing Street Rehabilitation projects in the following neighborhoods/streets in 2008:
- Thousand Oaks, Sierra Vista, San Gabriel Heights
- MLK, 10th & 15th Streets
- Northwest Blvd.
- Berry Creek, section 1
- S. College, 16th, and 17th
Street rehabilitation refers to the process of overlaying the existing asphalt with new asphalt. Prior to any construction tree trimming will need to be done to eliminate the chance of damaging any trees that overhang the streets. There will also be curb repair and other point repairs done during this process.
The benefit of re-surfacing the streets as opposed to waiting until the street has more fully deteriorated is that the street degrades most rapidly at the surface, and if we correct the aging asphalt pro-actively, we can delay or even prevent costly and disruptive reconstruction projects. The City of Georgetown currently maintains 260 miles of streets and this pro-active process helps to keep our costs low and helps us to meet the Georgetown City Council's Pavement Condition Index standard.
Surface Defects To Be Addressed:
- Ruts, Shoves, and Bumps
- Patches and Utility Cuts
- Reflective and Shrinkage Cracks
- Weathering, Bleeding and Raveling
Tree Pruning
All tree pruning will be performed under the supervision of an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture.
All trees over the street will be raised to an average height of 14 feet. All cuts on oak trees will be painted soon after they are made. Pruning saws will be disinfected between oak trees. Pruning cuts will be done in the proper location; stub cuts will not be made.
Most pruning will stop at the curb, not to extend into residential yards. However, in some cases the "proper cut" will need to be made farther back into the tree within residential yards. If this is the case you will receive notice from the contractor prior to this happening, at which time you will have the choice of having the proper cut being made or the limb being cut at the curb.
After the street has been completed there might be trees that have been scorched by the paving machine. If this happens, the contractor will be back out to prune any scorched limbs.
