FAQ

Flickering Lights

In severe wind, overhead transmission and distribution lines sometimes touch each other and cause the lights to flicker. Even if your house is served by underground lines, you may notice flickering in bad weather because your underground lines are linked with overhead lines.

If the weather is good and your lights flicker, call Georgetown Utility Systems. We maintain the electric lines running to your electric meter and we will be happy to check out the system and make any necessary repairs. The Georgetown Utility Systems' office can be reached at (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends.

If we have ruled out problems with the lines and your lights still flicker, you could have a circuit breaker box or internal electrical problem. If this is the case, you should call a licensed electrician to immediately check out the situation.

Power Outages

If you have a power failure, first check your house circuit breakers. Breaker boxes are often located inside the house, possibly in a closet or in the hallway. Sometimes breaker boxes are installed outside the house next to the actual electric meter. The breakers may have tripped to the off position. If you find that your breakers are all still in the "on" position, call Georgetown Utility Systems at (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends.

Streetlight Malfunctions

The Electric Department for the City of Georgetown is responsible for correcting streetlight malfunctions within the City of Georgetown. If you wish to report a streetlight malfunction, please call Georgetown Utility Systems at (512) 930-3555. Also, you can visit our Report a Street Light Outage Form, which will send an "issue ticket" to our crews about the need for service.

Trees on Power Lines

To prevent tree limbs from damaging or falling on electrical lines, the City of Georgetown trims those tree limbs which are in close proximity to the lines. To report limbs that are growing too close to or have fallen on electrical lines, please call (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends.

Road Signs and Pavement Markings

The Street Department maintains all of the signs and pavement markings on the 215 miles of paved roads throughout the city. If you have a question or comment, or if you would like to report damage to road signs or pavement markings, call Georgetown Utility Systems at (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends.

Drainage Ditches

The Stormwater Drainage Department is responsible for maintaining the flow of water through ditches in public right-of-ways and easements receiving stormwater runoff. This system consists of inlets or catch basins, open channels and ditches, underground pipelines, and detention ponds. City crews periodically clean the banks of the drainage ditches and remove any obstacles obstructing the flow of water through the ditch.

Residents are urged not to dispose of leaves or grass clippings into open drainage systems or to place any debris in a location that would impede the flow of water into the underground system. Such action may result in serious flooding. Primarily, your responsibility is to help eliminate the amount of debris deposited in the ditches or on the ditch banks that can cause flooding. This waste can accumulate in and pollute areas adjacent to the ditches, streams, and lakes, diminishing their aesthetic value.

In the event of flooding due to blockage of the storm drains system, residents may call Georgetown Utility Systems at (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends

Dirty Water

The water that runs from your faucet or shower may occasionally become discolored due to water main breaks, fires that use a high volume of water, or changes in water treatment. Do not be alarmed if your water is suddenly discolored. This water is still safe to drink. The discoloration is caused by an unusually high sediment content, which results from sudden changes in the system. When the cause of the problem is corrected, the sediments will be removed from the system.

Notify Georgetown Utility Systems that there is a problem by calling (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends.

Water Meter Leaks

If you think that your water meter has a leak, call Georgetown Utility Systems at (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends. A crew from the Water Department will be dispatched to check for a leak.

Water Pressure Problems

If you find that your water pressure is low and you own a water softener system, check an outside faucet. If the pressure is good outside, then the problem is usually the water softener. There is a bypass valve that can be turned off in order to bypass the system. If this does not work, check any inside faucets that have screens. When a softener goes out, it usually passes a sandy material into the pipes which can clog up the screens.

If the outside pressure is low, then you will need to contact the Water Department. Contact Georgetown Utility Systems at (512) 930-3555 24 hours a day 7 days a week including holidays and weekends.

Manhole Problems
