Awards

Following is a list of awards recognized and issued by the Georgetown Fire Service Division:


Firefighter of the Year

The firefighter of the year is awarded to operations personnel who hold the rank of firefighter. Criteria includes:

  • Motivation
  • Dependability
  • Dedication (to the fire service division and community)
  • Actions in an emergency situation


Apparatus Operator of the Year

The Apparatus Operator of the Year is awarded to operational personnel who hold the rank of Apparatus Operator.

Criteria includes:

  • Motivation
  • Dependability
  • Dedication (to the fire service division and community)
  • Actions in an emergency situation


Officer of the Year

The Officer of the Year is awarded to operational personnel holding the rank of Lieutenant or Captain.

Criteria includes:

  • Motivation
  • Dependability
  • Dedication (to the fire service division and community)
  • Actions in an emergency situation
  • Loyalty to supervisors and subordinates
  • Decisiveness
  • Other leadership traits


Crew of the Year

For the Crew of the Year Award, each Captain submits a nomination to the Awards Committee. Examples: Q1-B Shift, E3-C Shift, etc.

Criteria includes:

  • Performance at an emergency incident, company training, and physical testing
  • Demonstration of good attitude, enthusiasm, and aggressiveness for their job
  • Public relation skills and activities

The Crew of the Year is awarded a plaque to be hung at their station.



Staff Employee of the Year

The Staff employee of the year is awarded to any uniform staff officer or civilian staff personnel.

Criteria includes:

  • Motivation
  • Dedication to the division and community
  • Leadership traits
  • Dependability
  • High productivity rate
  • Effective and innovative ideas


J.P. Longino Award

Awarded to operations personnel holding the rank of volunteer fire fighter or auxiliary firefighter.

Criteria includes:

  • Motivation
  • Dependability
  • Dedication to the fire service division
  • Actions in an emergency situation


Medal of Honor

This award, the highest in the division, is awarded for acts performed which involve danger characterized as extreme personal risk above and beyond the call of duty. If death occurs while performing such an act, the award is presented posthumously to the next of kin.


Medal of Valor

This award is issued for performance that involves danger characterized as a great or unusual personal risk. It may also be characterized as an act of unusual merit outside the ordinary performance of duty.


Special Commendations

Awarded by the Fire Chief to members of the division who perform some act or service, which brings recognition to the Fire Service Division in a positive or proactive manner.


Letter of Commendation

The Letter of Commendation is a special letter presented to an individual for outstanding contribution or service to the Fire Service Division or the community. The letter must be originated by an officer in the person's chain of command and sent through channels and finally signed by the Chief of the Division. A copy of the letter will be placed in the person's permanent file


Donnie Johnson Award

Awarded to a member who develops a suggestion, initiates a new program, or performs a specific action, which exemplifies or furthers the Divisions progress toward the attainment of its mission.


Green Cross Bar

Presented to personnel who perform a life-saving rescue.

Criteria:

  • Actions of the rescuer(s) must have a direct impact on the safety and well being of the victim(s)
  • Actions were performed only during extrications, water rescues, confined-space rescues, trench rescues or high-angle rescues


Phoenix Bars

Presented to personnel who provide the ultimate service of saving a human life. The service may have been performed on or off duty.

Criteria:

  • CPR was performed on the patient and the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit or released by the hospital


Storks Award

Presented to the member(s) who assisted in delivering of a baby

Criteria:

  • The member or crew assisted in the delivering of the baby
  • Baby was not born prior to the arrival of the member or crew A stork's decal will be placed on the member(s) apparatus signifying the shift, date and number of deliveries. Example: 1 A-shift 10-1-00


Service Bars

Service bars will be given for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service. Service time will be calculated from when the person enters the Georgetown Fire Service Division. If a person takes a leave of absence form department for one year or more, the service time will start over from when the person re-enters the division.


Certification Level Bars

Presented to personnel, who obtain their basic, intermediate, advance and master certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Each member who obtains their higher certification letter must give a copy of the letter and a written request to receive a certification level bar to the awards committee prior to the annual banquet in order to receive their certification bar.


Citizen Medal of Honor

The Citizen Medal of Honor, the highest civilian award, is awarded to anyone who risks his or her life in the attempt to save another.


Plaque of Appreciation

To be awarded to any citizen when conditions warrant recognition for a service rendered or is a citizen has received five Certificates of Appreciation.


Certificate of Appreciation

May be generated at the discretion of the Awards Committee or by the Fire Chief of the Division at any time when conditions warrant recognition for services rendered. A letter signed by the Chief of the Division thanking the individual or business for their services will accompany the certificate.
