Downtown Design Guidelines

The historic core of Georgetown has served as the cultural center of the community for more than 150 years and retains many buildings that convey its early character. The blocks facing the courthouse square contain structures of historic significance that have been renovated and that enhance the quality of life as well as the economy for the community. Historic preservation and economic development are partners in the success of downtown. This relationship was formalized when the City established the Town Square Historic District (Area 1) around the square in 1975, and which was expanded in 2000.

This document* provides guidance for improvements to properties and work within the Downtown Overlay District in Georgetown, Texas. The guidelines are for property owners planning exterior alterations, additions to or the rehabilitation of existing buildings. They also apply to the design of new buildings.  The Historic and Architectural Review Commission uses these Guidelines to determine whether to issue a Certificate of Design Compliance.

*The Design Guidelines document has been split into smaller sections for ease of website viewing.
